Dear Voelcker is a short epistolary film exploring differences between utopian and social architecture when it was conceived and the same architecture as it stands today — often in disrepair and disillusion. In it I address my architect grandfather, John Voelcker, who died in 1972 and epitomises a figure and period at once familiar (from tin trunks of family photographs, plans and journal clippings) and foreign (I was born in 1990, and can only experience the buildings designed by my grandfather's generation as a newcomer and outsider). The film combines archival photographs with filmed shots recorded in January 2011 at Robin Hood Gardens and Limehouse, London. |
